Three native subterranean termite species (Reticulitermes) can be identified by size and coloration of the swarmer. Below left to right: (Hagen's brown (R. hageni), southern (R. virginicus), and eastern (R. flavipes).
Identifying features
Native to the southeast U.S.
Require moisture source, usually from soil
Statewide structural pest, also infests wood on ground
Swarmer color varies with species, usually black with wrinkled wings
Soldier with rectangular head, bases of mandibles thick
Swarms on sunny days after rainfall in the springtime
Native sub. forewing. Note wavy veins and lack of hairs
Native subs dying after flight
